Omaha Hi is a variation of poker much like Texas hold’em, with players sharing five community cards
1. Unlike hold’em, players are dealt four hole cards rather than two, but only two of them may be used in conjunction with three of the community cards to make the best five card poker hand. With the inclusion of two extra hole cards, poker hands like straights, flushes, and two pair, for example, are much more common in Omaha then in hold’em.2. Omaha Hi is typically played as a no limit or pot limit game.
3. Omaha is played identically to Texas hold’em, with play always beginning to the left of the dealer, starting with the small and big blind. Cards are dealt clockwise around the table and action beings with the player to the immediate left of the big blind, who can fold, call, or bet.
4. Action then follows clockwise around the table until all players have acted, after which the dealer discards the top card of the deck (known as ‘burning’) and deals out the top three cards face up to the middle of the table (these three cards being known as ‘the flop’).
5. Action proceeds around the table and is followed by the dealer burning the top card and dealing the next card face up (the ‘turn’), identically to the flop.
Tips
-Play follows that of the flop and turn, and ends with the dealer burning and dealing the final card face up (the ‘river’), where the last round of betting takes place.
-After this final round of betting, players reveal their hands, distinguishing which two of their four cards, combined with three of the community cards, form their five card poker hand.
